day 9 - Eskimo dancers and bushplanes

Alaska Native Heritage Center, Anchorage




Performer: "My grandma have not seen a tree before her age of 60. She lived in the North. There are no trees in the North".


There are 11 big native groups in Alaska, but they can be grouped into 5 big geographical groups:



Inupiaq eskimos and St. Lawrence Yupik




Yup`ik and Cup'ik




Athabascan




Aleut and Alutiiq




Eyak, Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian

Inupiaq igloo
I always thought that the igloos are only from snow and ice.
But here in Alaska (where there's no permanent snow coverage) they built
igloos from wood and soil. Because the polar bears were around year round..
(The igloo is opened only here in the centre to give people an easy access.)

I returned our rental car, this was one of the dirtiest.
We drove about 2000 miles, abour 250 of them on unpaved roads.
